Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture combines the traditional concept of acupuncture with the modern use of electrical stimulation being applied to the needles.

As with normal acupuncture, fine sterile needles are inserted into specific points along a meridian.Once the needles are inserted they are connected to a device via wires with small alligator clips that delivers a mild electrical current. The current assists to stimulate the acupuncture points more intensely than needles alone.

The frequency and intensity of the needles can be adjusted to suit certain conditions.

  • Low-frequency stimulation (e.g.,2–4 Hz) may promote endorphin release for pain relief.
  • High-frequency stimulation (e.g., 50–100 Hz) might target nerve stimulation and muscle relaxation.

Mechanism and Effects

The electrical current enhances the stimulation of the acupoints, which is thought to:

  • Boost Circulation: Improve blood flow to the targeted area.
  • Stimulate the Nervous System: Activate nerve pathways, potentially influencing pain signals or muscle responses.
  • Release Neurotransmitters: Trigger the release of natural painkillers like endorphins or serotonin. In TCM terms, it’s believed to help balance the body’s energy flow, though Western science often explains its effects through neurological and physiological responses.

Common Uses

Electroacupuncture is often used for conditions where strongerstimulation is desired. Some examples include:

  • Chronic Pain: Back pain, arthritis, migraines, or neuropathy.
  • Muscle Issues: Spasms, tension, or rehabilitation after injury.

Safety and Considerations

  • It’s generally considered safe when performed by a trained practitioner.
  • Side effects are rare but might include mild bruising, soreness, or dizziness.

It’s not recommended for people withpacemakers, epilepsy, or certain heart conditions due to theelectrical component.
